Belly Buttons - Innie or Outtie PDF Print E-mail

Does Anyone Care?

Although contemplating one's navel is a popular pastime, not many people actually think about the umbilical cord that once attached them to their mother.

When you are born the cord is cut immediately after delivery and the result is a neat little knot. As the wound heals, the knot falls away and leaves the traditional puckered appearance of the belly button. The knot is more likely to shrink down into an "innie" if there is a good cut and only a small section of cord. It will form an "outtie" if there is a longer section of cord left. Whether you end up an "innie" or "outtie" depends on how your body heals, and the skill of the doctor or nurse who tied the knot.

Even in their pre-school years, some kids realize that they are different. They have an outtie while the other kids all have innies. "I felt weird" said John of Waterloo. "All the other guys had innies and I just didn't feel normal. Outties are never seen in magazines or on TV."

John's experience highlights a clear fashion fact: Innies are in. And outties? Well, they're out.

But unlike the scars that result from stitches or scrapes, the belly button scar can be totally reversed. And people all over the country, mostly women, but some men, are having the minor surgery that does precisely that.

How to Clean Your Belly Button

Ok, this is a gross topic! But belly buttons are one of the hardest areas on your body to clean properly. Some people always seem to have lint and dirt in their belly button. Here is how to clean your belly button and make your body clean.

Steps

1. Gather your supplies. You will need a few cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol to safely clean out your navel.
2. Give yourself plenty of time. You could hurt yourself rushing. Be very patient.
3. Dip one head of the cotton swab into the rubbing alcohol and gently stretch one side of your belly button with one hand. Rest the other hand (the one with the swab) in such a way it stretches out the other side of your navel.
4. Gently work your way around the belly button.
5. Discard old swabs and repeat the process if your navel is still dirty.

Tips

* Don't push too hard. Be gentle!
* Also another important tip for those whose belly buttons are clean but smell bad and the skin is red. Use a wash that is for sensitive skin (you can also use femine wash). The most common reason why belly buttons smell is that when you wash with bar soap and do not rinse well your skin becomes dry and irritated.
* Q-tips are the same thing as cotton swabs, they are just a brand name.
* Using the rubbing alcohol shouldn't burn, unless you have a cut or sore in your navel. But, if for some reason it does irritate you try Witch Hazel. Hydrogen Peroxide works as well.
* Your belly button is a closed, healed area of your stomach, nothing should be able to enter that way. Ask your doctor if it concerns you.
